FROM THE PARISH PRIEST
Members in Good Standing
by Fr. Romey Rosco
Now and then, I am asked to write a letter of recommendation, verifying that a
parishioner is a "member in good standing."
But what does it mean to be a "good standing" member of the
Church?
1. Above all, such members
must believe in the doctrines of the Orthodox Christian Faith.
That would necessitate studying the teachings of the Lord and His Church.
2. A "good
standing" member follows the Christian way of life.
Jesus proclaimed a life that reflects certain values and morals, and He
expected everyone who follows Him to follow that disciplined way of living,
keeping the Commandments, and practicing prayer, worship, sacrifice, service to
others, and loving in the name of Christ.
3. "Good
standing" members fulfill their spiritual obligations, attending the Divine
Liturgy on the Lord's Day and on major feast days, etc., worshipping the Lord,
receiving His mercy through Holy Confession, and His Own Precious Body and Blood
in Holy Communion.
4. A "good
standing" in church membership certainly requires fulfilling financial
obligations to the parish. No parish
should ever have to beg for the support of its own membership.
Dues, pledges and other donations should be made properly and cheerfully,
as we enable God's work to continue in the world.
As we look to the New Year, I call on everyone to join the parish if you
haven't already, and to be worthy examples of "good standing members."
