On Freedom of Choice

        In our society, we make much about personal rights and choices.  “You are your own master.  Don’t let anyone stand in the way of your personal happiness,” we are told.  It’s a concept which appeals to one’s basic instincts and desires.

        But Saint Paul, in his letter to the Romans, reminds us that we must answer to a higher authority – certainly higher than ourselves.  The Apostle says: “As long as we live, we are responsible to the Lord....Both in life and in death, we are the Lord’s.”

        Mother Theresa, of blessed memory, once said, “We are not here to be successful.  We are here to be faithful.”  Faithful to whom?  Faithful to what?  To personal worldly success regardless of cost?  Or shouldn’t we be faithful to the God of love in Whose Image we were all created.

        When you make choices in your life, always consider “What would the Lord expect me to do?”

        Freedom of choice means the freedom to choose what is right and good and true.  And who should guide us, if not the God of our salvation Who said “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life!”
