Sacrament of Holy Unction

The faithful bring clothes, icons and crosses to be blessed. During the service, seven Epistles and seven Gospels are read. Reading one of the Holy Gospel readings over some of the faithful.
A special prayer of healing is read over the heads of the faithful who come forward for this blessing. At the end of the service,
Fr. Romey anoints the faithful with holy oil.

 

Divine Liturgy w/ Blessing of the Bread & Wine for Paşti

The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is celebrated. The faithful receive Holy Communion. The bread and wine used for making the "paşti" are blessed at the end of the Liturgy.
Responses are led by Fr. Horaţiu and parish cantors. The dismissal blessing.

 

Reading of the Twelve Gospels

Twelve Gospels are read detailing the last supper, betrayal, trial, and passion of Christ. The faithful kneel for the readings.
Fr. Romey reading one of the Gospels. At the end of the service, the faithful come forward to kiss the cross bearing the icon of the Crucifixion of Christ.

 

Vespers w/ Laying of Christ in the Tomb

The body of Christ, symbolized by the icon of the Crucifixion, is hung on the cross. The cantor reads the Epistle from 1st Corinthians.
Fr. Romey reads the Holy Gospel concerning the death and burial of Christ. The Epitaph, depicting the burial of Christ, is brought out in procession and placed in the tomb.
The Epitaph remains in the tomb until the next day.

 

Lamentations Service (Prohodul)

The Lamentations funeral
service is celebrated.
The cantors leading the responses. Clergy and faithful hold lighted candles during the "funeral" service.
The procession begins to make its way out of the church. The procession, led by the Epitaph, goes around the church.
Upon returning to the entrance, everyone passes under the Epitaph, symbolizing entering into the grave with Christ.
The Epitaph is returned to the tomb and the service continues in the darkened church. The reading of the Holy Gospel.
Fr. Romey comments on the symbolism of the procession around the church as it relates to our sharing in the death and resurrection of Christ. The faithful come forward in a quiet church to venerate the tomb.

 

Resurrection Matins

The light from the Paschal candle begins to overcome the darkness. "Come receive the light from the never-ending Light..." The procession makes its way through the crowd...
Everyone gathers at the entrance before entering the church. Fr. Horaţiu reads the Holy Gospel proclaiming the discovery of the empty tomb.
"This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!" The choir responds with the Resurrection Tropar, "Christ is risen from the dead..."
"Open the gates you princes and let the King of Glory enter in!" The clergy and faithful return into the brightly lit church to continue the service. Fr. Horaţiu censes during the singing of the Paschal Canon.

The dismissal blessing.
At the end of the Resurrection Matins service, the traditional blessing of baskets takes place. The faithful come forward to be anointed with holy oil at the end of the service.

 

Resurrection Divine Liturgy
Sunday, 24 April 20

"Let God arise! Let His enemies be scattered! Let those who hate Him flee from Him!" "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and to those in the tombs bestowing life!" The Little Entrance.
 The Epistle is proclaimed in both the English & Romanian languages. Fr. Romey proclaims the Holy Gospel from the first chapter of the book of St. John the Evangelist.
The Great Entrance. "We offer You Your own of Your own, in behalf of all and for all."
The faithful come forward for Holy Communion. Following the service, the ladies of the parish prepared pastries for the reception in the hall.
Fr. Horaţiu blesses the food... ...and everyone enjoys the delicious treats.
